# CapitalBench portfolio-v3.0 Task
You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic judgment without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.
Your objective is to rank assets for realized return over exactly one week and identify candidates that can beat SPY. CapitalBench, not you, constructs the scored portfolio from your judgment using the fixed rule below.
The deterministic candidate slate exists to prevent omission; it is not a recommendation. Assess every slate candidate. You may add at most two wildcard options from the complete allowed universe, but only when the frozen briefing supplies a specific reason the mechanical slate missed.
Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, table order, and slate inclusion as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.
Do not extrapolate recent returns mechanically. A recent winner has no positive edge without independent in-window support. Give extreme recent losers a fair reversal test, but distinguish temporary price overreaction from fundamental deterioration. Use the supplied cross-sectional dispersion, medium-horizon relative strength, volatility, drawdown, volume, briefing evidence, and quality evidence. Optimize for the stated close-to-close scoring window only.
For every assessed candidate, provide probabilities and an 80% excess-return range relative to SPY. Rank every assessment without ties. top3_option_ids must be the options ranked 1, 2, and 3. prefer_spy is a diagnostic judgment and does not override the deterministic rule.
CapitalBench applies this rule after your response:
1. Preserve your candidate ranks.
2. A non-SPY candidate is eligible only when you label its recent return as overreaction and give it at least a 55% probability of beating SPY.
3. Select at most the first three eligible candidates in your rank order.
4. Fill fixed portfolio slots of 35%, 35%, and 30% in that order.
5. Put every unused slot in SPY.
You do not submit allocations or an alternative portfolio. Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Rank quality pullbacks with intact prior uptrends: cybersecurity (best quality score, strong prior trend, modest pullback) and aerospace/defense (sharp one-week drop against a supportive geopolitical backdrop of Iran conflict and elevated Brent) as overreaction reversals; software as a strength-hold but without an overreaction label. Crypto continuations are too extended and low quality to trust for another week.
SPY fell 1.37% on the week while breadth (RSP -0.49%) held better and defensive/hard assets rallied; 5s active dispersion of 5.2% is elevated. Fed minutes lean hawkish but the week's pullback in high-quality tech themes with strong prior trends (cybersecurity, defense) looks like temporary de-risking rather than fundamental deterioration, and geopolitical tension (Iran, Brent $92.67) supports defense demand.
- Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 60% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
- NVIDIA earnings Aug 26 could swing all tech-adjacent themes sharply either way
- Hawkish Fed tone and a 5.27% 30-year yield could pressure high-beta growth further
- A geopolitical de-escalation would remove the defense-sector tailwind
- Crypto momentum could persist another week, making momentum-fade ranks costly

Only two candidates clear the overreaction plus 55% bar: CIBR and ITA, both high-quality groups with strong prior relative trends and unusually deep one-week relative pullbacks unexplained by briefing fundamentals. ARKQ ranks third on quality but its NVIDIA-earnings beta and lack of a clean overreaction signature keep it below the eligibility threshold, leaving the remaining slot in SPY. Crypto's parabolic three-session move and solar's persistent deterioration are avoided.
SPY fell 1.4% on the week with breadth rotating away from mega-cap tech toward defensives, healthcare, precious metals and international. Rates remain elevated (10y 4.74%, 30y 5.27%) with hawkish FOMC minutes, so long-duration growth is under pressure. NVIDIA earnings on August 26 is the dominant single-name catalyst inside the scoring window and cuts both ways for semis and AI baskets. Cross-sectional dispersion is high (5.2% 5-session active spread) and crypto has spiked on huge volume, which is stretched rather than a fresh edge. Best risk-adjusted reversal candidates are high-quality tech-adjacent groups with strong prior relative trend and a sharp one-week pullback: cybersecurity, aerospace/defense, and to a lesser degree autonomous robotics.
- Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
- NVIDIA's Aug 26 results could trigger a broad tech/AI drawdown that hits cybersecurity and robotics alongside semis
- Hawkish rate repricing with 10y at 4.74% and 30y at 5.27% pressures high-beta growth baskets
- Aerospace/defense weakness may reflect unreported order or budget news rather than a temporary overreaction
- High cross-sectional dispersion (5.2%) means one-week sector outcomes are wide and noisy
- A sharp crypto or commodity unwind could spill into broader risk appetite before the Aug 31 close

Cybersecurity, aerospace and defense, and autonomous robotics combine strong prior relative performance with recent pullbacks judged excessive. Software and semiconductors remain credible alternatives, but the former lacks a pullback entry and the latter carries substantial event and volatility risk.
Active-return dispersion is elevated at 5.20%, while only 39.13% of assets rose over five sessions despite broad 21-session strength. This favors selective reversals in high-quality prior leaders rather than indiscriminate momentum chasing.
- Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- Autonomous Technology and Robotics (ARKQ): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- NVIDIA results could trigger a broad technology selloff and invalidate the technology-pullback thesis.
- July Personal Income and Outlays or revised GDP could lift rate expectations and pressure growth exposures.
- Escalation or rapid de-escalation of the Iran conflict could produce abrupt cross-asset and defense-sector reversals.
- High dispersion may persist through fundamental deterioration rather than mean reversion.

Ranked quality pullbacks and medium-strength names with reversal or continuation support ahead of one-week close; crypto shows continuation but lower rank due to volatility.
Mixed signals with equity weakness offset by commodity and crypto strength; quality pullbacks and volume dislocations provide selective reversal opportunities within one-week window.
- Metals and Mining (XME): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 62% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 4: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
- High volatility in crypto and semiconductors
- Potential further equity drawdown if macro data disappoints
- Volume dislocations may reverse quickly

Highest-conviction edges are moderate mean-reversion in high-quality or low-beta names that sold off hard without clear fundamental breaks; aerospace leads on geopolitics plus deepest slate shock, cybersecurity on top quality pullback scores, and regional banks on low beta oversold tape. Extended crypto and low-quality solar lack reliable one-week excess edge; semis carry NVDA binary risk without clear overreaction label strength. Prefer SPY as baseline given only thin probabilistic edges.
SPY soft on the week amid sticky inflation prints, softer labor revisions, elevated long rates, and geopolitics supporting oil; Friday bounce and strong PMI contrast with crypto/precious-metal surges and selective equity pullbacks, yielding mixed continuation versus shock-reversal setups into NVDA and data releases.
- Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 60% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- Regional Banks (KRE): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- NVIDIA results and July PCE/GDP revisions mid-window can reverse tech and beta factors sharply
- Further Middle East / tanker escalation could spike oil and risk-off equities beyond defense bounce
- Elevated long-end yields and hawkish Fed minutes residual may pressure duration-sensitive and high-vol growth names
- Crypto and metals momentum unwind could lift cross-asset vol and correlation to SPY

The only names with a fair one-week reversal case versus a still-near-high SPY are the quality shock pullbacks in aerospace/defense, cybersecurity, and low-beta regional banks; crypto and metals already extended, solar looks deteriorated, and semis are a two-way NVIDIA event rather than a clean overreaction.
SPY is only modestly off highs after a down week while 5-session active-return dispersion is elevated; crypto already ran hard, several quality names pulled back, and the window includes GDP/PCE plus NVIDIA results, so reversal and continuation can coexist.
- Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- Regional Banks (KRE): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
- NVIDIA results and the August 26 GDP/PCE package can dominate the week and overwhelm sector mean-reversion.
- Geopolitical oil/tanker headlines can keep risk premia elevated and reverse defense or bank rebounds.
- Elevated 5-session dispersion and high-beta tech/crypto residual volatility can make excess ranges miss even if direction is right.
